Puppy Beheading Teens Have Charges Upgraded

Two Alabama teens have been dealing with a boatload of trouble and backlash since disturbing images emerged on social media that showed the teens beheading three stray puppies with a machete. According to WSFA, charges have been upgraded against the teens from misdemeanor to felony status.

Ashley Johnston, 18, and his 17-year-old accomplice captured footage of the horrific attack on Snapchat, and the posts quickly made the rounds at their high school. Someone who viewed the footage alerted police, who would then brought the teens in for questioning. Johnston confessed and seemed remorseful, and the pair was initially charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.

Charges have now been upgraded to felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and torture, which each carries with them the potential for 10-year prison terms.

“There is no excuse for killing three puppies and cutting their heads off. It's sad and outrageous. We felt like given the horrific nature of these crimes, that these charges needed to be felonies," explained District Attorney Michael Jackson.

He would go on to add that “People are just shocked that anybody would do this to puppies and of course we're going to make sure justice is done."
