Officials Make Disturbing Find Inside Bags That Were Suppose To Contain Sawdust

Police in Russia had been investigating a small lumber company. At a railway station, they found 37 bags that were supposed to have been full of sawdust. When police opened the bags, they couldn't believe what was really inside.

Police officers found bags stuffed with severed body parts of bears. The parts were being smuggled abroad, most likely headed for China or other Asian countries where wild animal remains fetch a high price.

Bear claws in China are considered a delicacy. Gallbladders and some other parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine concoctions. Bears often fall prey to poachers and get illegally traded.

In Vietnam, authorities estimate that about 1,000 bears are being held captive in bil farms. The farmers will keep bears in deplorable conditions, confining them to tiny, filthy cages. They frequently tap the bears for bile through painful wounds they inflict on the bears' sides. There is no evidence that bear bile has any medicinal benefits, and the practice has been outlawed, but it doesn't stop the black market.

Russia, due to its convenient proximity to China, is plagued with black market wildlife poachers. In the instance of the 37 bags, police found 527 bear feet, sacks full of muzzles and gallbladders. They also found the glands of three musk deer.

"The police are establishing all circumstances of the affair, the damage caused to the state interests protected by law, and persons implicated in illegal poaching and smuggling of [wildlife] derivatives," said a statement from Russian authorities.
