Man Agrees To Take Cat Of Relative With Alzheimer's - No Idea What He's Signing Up For

Paul Russell came to one of those unfortunate conclusions with his 82-year-old uncle that was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The uncle could no longer care for himself, and it was time for him to go into a nursing home.

To make things even tougher, his uncle had a 17-year-old cat named Siam that he wouldn’t be able to take with him. His uncle was devastated, but Paul assured him that he would take care of Siam.

As Little Things shares, Paul stayed true to his word. He would arrive at his uncle’s home to pick up the cat. His jaw was soon on the floor. Paul thought he had stumbled upon some kind of monster.

"When they put him in the nursing home, I thought, 'Hey, he has a cat.' The house was still open, so I went down and left some food for the cat until we figured out what we're going to do. Then somebody mentioned that he had a second cat,” he explained. “So I started searching around, and suddenly this huge creature darts out from under the bed and runs down to the cellar, and I thought, 'What was that?'"

Due to his uncle’s declining health, he hadn’t been able to care for the cat properly either.

"At first I thought it was a cat who had a blanket draped over her that she dragged down. But no - it turned out to be Hidey. She hid down in the corner of the cellar. I'm down there with a flashlight looking - it was almost like a horror movie,” he continued. “And I found her hunkering in the corner. Probably very scared. Probably in a lot of pain."

The cat was horribly matted with overgrown fur, and there was no way that a simple trip to the groomers was going to be able to take care of it. Paul knew that the cat needed some medical attention, and even the vets were aghast when he brought the cat in.

"They hadn't seen anything like that. Even looking online, I had a hard time finding anything similar, so it's definitely a unique case," explained Caitlin Lasky, senior marketing communications manager for Western PA Humane Society. "It was 2 pounds of fur. Lots of fur. It had to be years of matting for it to get that long. She was overweight as well. Hidey was really overweight, so that makes it harder for [cats] to groom themselves, and that's when you see matting happen."

Once the cat was back to resembling a normal feline and able to get around, Paul brought her home. She’s doing much better now, but she’s still going through a bit of an adjustment period.

"She's been hiding under the bed for the last couple of days. I've been dragging her out, and holding her, and she purrs a lot. The last couple of days, she's climbed out from under the bed on her own and into a cat bed I have,” Russell added. “So she's starting to work her way to see people more."

Here’s to hoping for better days for Hidey and Paul’s uncle as they both get used to getting cared for properly.
