Lucas The K-9 Saves The Day When His Deputy Partner Is Ambushed At Deserted Rest Stop

During his normal course of duty, Hancock County Sheriff's Office deputy Todd Frazier travelled down a deserted road in Pearlington, Mississippi, and he suddenly came across a lone car at a rest area. Frazier wasn’t sure if the occupants of the car needed help or not, but he decided to check it out to ensure that all was well.

While Frazier’s intentions were good, it proved to be a costly mistake as far as his own safety was concerned. As Frazier approached the vehicle, he heard some rustling in the nearby woods.

Before he knew what hit him, he was under attack. Two men rushed out of the woods and began assaulting him, and another man exited the vehicle to join in.

Glenn Grannan, Chief Investigator for Hancock County Sheriff's Office, provided some more details on the frightening scene.

"The deputy tripped and fell to the ground as he was backing away from the vehicle," he said. "That's when all three male subjects, including the driver, ambushed him, cut him on the forehead with a sharp object and dragged him into the woods."

As Chief Deputy Don Bass notes, Frazier didn’t stand a chance after being unexpectedly jumped. He was essentially easy pickings for the men, who were clearly up to no good and enraged at the sight of an approaching officer.

"They told him they were going to slit his throat, and they were dragging him toward the woods," he explained.

Frazier was completely alone in a deserted spot - or so it seemed. During the scuffle, he was able to hit a button to remotely unlock the doors on his police cruiser, and help was quickly on the way.

Lucas, Frazier’s K-9 partner got out of the car, and he was none too pleased with the sight of his partner fighting for his life. The well-trained black Belgian Malinois leapt into action, and he was a whirlwind of a tornado as he defended his partner and saved his life.

"We don't know how many he got; we just know he had blood all over him," explained Sheriff Ricky Adam.

The attackers fled from that point, but things would’ve been a whole lot worse for Frazier if Lucas wasn’t there to help him out. As for the brave pup, he suffered some damage in the melee as well, but he’s expected to make a full recovery from his injuries, which include a torn ligament, broken teeth, and road rash.

"It hits us hard, it brings you to your knees. We're not a large agency, and all these guys have families," said Bass.

"The main thing for anybody is to go home safe. We want you to go home at night, but it could happen to any one of them."

"The threat is here and the possibility is real," he said.

That’s a chilling sentiment from Bass, but it’s a cold hard reality of a day in the life for members of law enforcement across the nation. The brave men and women that are tasked with protecting and serving their communities are literally taking their lives into their hands each and every day, as they have no idea when even the most routine calls can escalate into untenable situations.
