K9 Receives Incredible Sendoff After Sacrificing Everything For 9 Years

After serving 8 years as a police dog, Bronx, a Belgian Malinois service dog from California, has been walked out of the Bakersfield Police Department one last time. The heartwarming sendoff was organized when Bronx’s handler realized that the police dog had been serving in the Bakersfield Department for more than 9 years.

According to Californian police regulations, police dogs are to be retired after their ninth year of active service. Luckily for Bronx, the men and women of the Bakersfield Police Department had no intention of letting the valiant police dog leave before being recognized.

As Bronx was walked towards the door for the last time, the entire police station formed an honor guard and began applauding. The applause continued until the excited police dog exited the building and received a few special treats.

During his years in the department, the authorities and residents of Bakersfield grew to love Bronx. Not only was Bronx a comforting site around the community, but he was also a valuable asset in the fight against drug crime and weapons possession.

Although Bronx was adored by the entire Bakersfield community, there’s one person who will feel the police dog’s departure more keenly than anybody else. Bronx’s handler, Senior Officer Chris Dalton, had been serving in the force with Bronx since he was a SWAT recruit.

In the following years, Senior Officer Dalton has accompanied Bronx on just as many sniffer patrols as regular patrols. Now, Senior Officer Dalton has taken on the role of caring for Bronx after he is retired as a police dog.

Although Senior Officer Dalton won’t see Bronx at work, he will be able to come home to the best companion a man could ever ask for.

After a video of the emotional sendoff was uploaded to YouTube, a member of the Bakersfield Police Department issued the following statement, writing:

“Bronx has served our department with his handler, Senior Officer Chris Dalton, for eight years. He is one of the longest-serving K9s our agency has ever had. Chris and Bronx have been partners since January 2010, and have served on the SWAT team since 2014.

“Bronx has done numerous demos for schools and tour groups at our department and has been awarded many awards throughout the years for his dedication, skills, and work. Thank you for being a loyal K9 all these years, Bronx.”

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of online commenters have reacted to the news of Bronx’s departure with surprise and awe.

“Love this picture, such a handsome dog. Thank you so much for your service, Bronx,” wrote one Mail Online commenter. “Hope you have a relaxing retirement.”

Unfortunately, one commenter saw the sendoff as an excuse to rubbish California’s police officers, writing: “You got to love California police officers. They make $200K-$300K per year, retiring after 20 years to almost full pay, and they spend their days doing things like this instead of patrolling the street.”

However, this hateful message was slammed by other commenters, who ignored the vile remark and spread a different kind of message: “I love you, doggy. Enjoy your time off. Thank you for your service. Thanks for putting your life on the line for us. You’re so beautiful. I just love you.”

“Great job, Chris and Bronx, for keeping each other safe during the working years,” wrote another commenter. “Bronx, now enjoy the backyard and all the family love and attention. Go get, boy!”
