Hunter Bags Rare Doe With 8-Point Antlers (PHOTOS)

A hunting enthusiast set his sights on what he thought was a big, beautiful buck with 8-point antlers. After killing his prey, he snapped some photos and prepared to butcher the animal. He was shocked that his buck turned out to be a rare doe.

Chuck Rorie of Monroe, N.C. was on a hunting trip in Kansas when he found his trophy. He quickly realized something was wrong. Rorie explains, "...I was skinning it I realized something didn’t look right. It didn’t have the right private parts."

It turned out that the animal did have private parts, just not the parts Rorie expected. It wasn't a buck, but a doe with antlers.

"I think the last number I heard at a scientific meeting was something like one in about 10,000 will have antlers," said biologist Grant Woods. "It’s rare, but it’s certainly going to happen."

According to Woods, a doe growing antlers is a similar phenomenon to women who grow too much facial hair. Just a little too much testosterone is behind it.

The 225-pound doe had thick 17-inch wide antlers with eight perfect points. The antlers were shiny and rock-solid-- antlers that any buck would wear proudly. Even among doe who do grow antlers, it's rare for such a beautiful, full set to develop.

Rorie, proud of his trophy, plans to have it mounted. In his neck of the woods, antlers like that are impressive even on bucks. "We don’t have many big bucks," he said. "So when a guy brings a buck into the processor I’ll be able to tell him I’ve killed a doe a lot bigger than that buck they just shot."
