Homeowner Trained In Martial Arts Fights Off Five Deadly Attackers In Home Invasion

A homeowner was woken up at a little after 3 a.m. to find a gang of strangers had broken in and were demanding money. They were wielding bats, golf clubs and machetes, threatening the father, his son and dog.

The man, who was trained in martial arts, managed to fight off the assailants. They fled the scene, and didn't managed to get anything. The homeowner did sustain injuries in the fight, as did his loyal pooch.

David Pugh was in his $560,000 home in the West Midlands of England, sleeping soundly, when a gang of raiders burst in during the wee hours of the morning. They attacked Pugh's teen son and dog, and demanded cash from the father.

"There was a loud bang at 3am when they smashed the patio doors to get in but I thought Zeus had knocked something over," Pugh tells the Daily Mail. "By the time I got out of bed, totally naked, I was approaching the door and it was kicked in."

He came face-to-face with the home intruders. "The men kept shouting "where's the money? Give us your money!" he added.

Instinct took over, Pugh said. He's trained in Israeli self-defense, Krav Maga, and when he saw the men in his home he reacted to defend himself and his family.

Krav Maga literally means 'contact-combat', and is a military self-defense fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces and security forces. It combines boxing, wrestling, judo and karate.

"I grabbed the first couple I could, it turned into a brawl and a battle. I just grabbed what I could and hit them with aftershave bottles and chairs," he said. "I was getting hit repeatedly on the head - they had machetes, a baseball bat and a golf club."

Pugh, who is trained in martial arts, defended his son and dog and fought with the intruders.

"I was desperately trying to get to my son's room, but I had so many splits to my head, I was drenched in blood," he continues. "We could only assume they saw that and thought, "we have gone too far" and got out of here."

They ran from the scene empty-handed. Pugh suffered a broken nose and several facial injuries from the fight.

"The police said it was one of the most brutal attacks in a home they had ever seen," he said.

Pugh took photos of himself and his dog immediately after the battle. The graphic photos show him covered in blood from his head, face, and down his shoulder. Blood is also splattered all over his home.

The dog, Zeus, was hit on the head and received a bad cut from the battle. The dog became confused and ended up running into a canal. The dog was taken to a vet and treated with stitches to close his head wound.

Pugh says his son is traumatized by the incident and has trouble sleeping since the attacks.

"They must have thought they half-killed me. In retrospect we were probably quite lucky," said Pugh.

Police got the call at just 9 minutes after three that morning and rushed to the property. "Officers arrived eight minutes after the 999 call. House to house enquiries have been carried out, CCTV is being examined and items recovered for forensic analysis," said a spokesperson for the police department.

"Investigations continue and anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 quoting log number 204 13/2."
