This German Shepherd Puppy was Abandoned in Brazil – Now He is a Symbol of Christmas Spirit Around the World

Every year, tens of thousands of puppies are abandoned on the streets by owners who don’t have the time, money or heart to care for them. Many of these adorable and innocent pups die without shelter, food or care.

Others become feral dogs and pose a danger to humans and other animals.

However, some abandoned puppies find themselves in situations that bring them back in contact with loving human beings, inspiring people to show love when they would otherwise show callousness.

In fact, a viral story about an abandoned puppy is currently gaining an enormous amount of online traction in the leadup to Christmas. This particular story is about events that happened all the way back in 2008, but its message could not be more contemporary.

The story began when an unidentified dog owner in Santa Catarina, Brazil, abandoned a German Shepherd puppy in the city streets. Unsurprisingly, the poor pup was confused, frightened and very cold during the night.

Left to fend for himself, the German Shepherd pup began desperately running around nearby streets for a warmer place to sleep.

As luck would have it, the unnamed pup soon came across a Nativity display on the city streets. In a desperate bid to keep warm, the German Shepherd puppy crawled into the display, jumping into the straw-filled manger that held Baby Jesus and falling asleep.

In the morning, local residents and tourists all gathered around the pup as he gradually woke up. Despite the crowd and flashing phones, the calm German Shepherd puppy stayed still in the warm manger, wagging his tail as people took photos of him crawling over the display’s Baby Jesus and hopping in and out of the manger.

At the time, the photos – showing the adorable puppy curled up next to Jesus – went viral in Brazil and many other places around the world. Now, every year, the same photos return to circulation, reminding people of the true spirit of Christmas.

Rather than chase the tiny puppy away from the Nativity display, the residents of Santa Catarina cared for the unnamed puppy, feeding him and working to find a new home for the abandoned dog. It’s likely that this story is going to keep amazing people for many more holiday events to come.

Although details are scarce when it comes to tracking down the current whereabouts of the puppy, most people believe that he was adopted by one of the locals who saw the cute dog curled up in a manger.

In another tragic but heart-warming story, animal welfare authorities were able to find a loving home for a puppy that had his ear cut off by his former owner. After being placed in a foster home, the puppy, named Rocky, began to recover and has quickly adapted to the different level of hearing.

Now, Rocky lives with a family that will always love and care for him, especially around Christmas time.
