As Firetrucks Hold 9/11 Memorial Display, Bald Eagle Lands On Truck

The tragic September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. is still a painful memory, particularly for firefighters. So many brave firefighters lost their lives running into the burning buildings to save people that Fire Departments across the U.S. have memorial tributes each year on the anniversary of the devastating day.

One Fire Department was setting up their display for the anniversary when they got an unexpected visitor.

The Andover Fire Department in Minneapolis, Minnesota were staging their display to commemorate the 17th anniversary of 9/11 this week outside of Coon Rapids. They parked aerial firetrucks on an overpass and suspended the American Flag between the extended ladders.

"We will never forget," read a banner displayed from the overpass.

To the surprise of all the firefighters present, an unexpected guest made an appearance at the memorial. A bald eagle flew up and landed on top of one of the trucks.

The bald eagle is America's national bird, and is part of the US National Emblem. The majestic species was chosen by congress in 1782 because at the time the founding fathers believed it only existed in North America. The beautiful bird symbolizes independence, pride, strength and freedom.

Fire Chief Jerry Streich was on the scene and shocked when the eagle perched on the display. "Unbelievable," he said as he filmed a video.

He posted a video clip on the department's Facebook page. "Look what landed on top of the aerial on 9/11, isn't that unbelievable?" He asked in the video. "This eagle just landed on the aerial while we're doing the 9/11 memorial. Phenomenal."

"I had to look at it a few times," the chief later told KARE-TV. "And then I thought, I need to videotape this!"

The video went viral and had over six million views within 48 hours. "There's no better symbol to represent America today than a flag but then for an eagle to land on a fire truck holding a flag, I mean, it doesn't get much more symbolic than that," Streich said in the interview.

Facebook commenters were equally stunned and delighted by the eagle's appearance.]

"Wow! Wow! A unbelievable message from our Country’s Nat’l Symbol ! A message from all the victims in Heaven," wrote one person.

"Awesome that gave me goose bumps God bless the USA," said another.

"Emotional! Thank you for sharing & thank you volunteers for taking time today to honor & remember all victims of 9/11," said another.

"He is making the rounds. He knows people need this today. This is awesome," added another person.

"Been a firefighter/paramedic 35 years. Retired in March. This tribute and Eagle made me cry. I was on duty on 9-11. Many memories came flooding back. I’ll never forget," said one commenter who was particularly touched by the video.

The fire department responded to thank all the positive commenters. "Thank you all for your continued support! We are happy you all share the patriotism and pride we have. As of this second, this video has over 6.3 million views and attention from around the globe. Keep sharing!" the update from the fire department read.

September 11th is still a hard day for many Americans to get through, but this little eagle was a symbol of hope that helped a lot of those who are still struggling.
