Farmer And 13 Cows Found Dead - Cause Finally Revealed

A “deadly dome of air” that occurred in a manure holding tank is responsible for the death of a 29-year-old Wisconsin farmer and 13 of his cows.

"I know of 13 dead cows," said Portage County Coroner Scott Rifleman, according to WAOW. "There were others that were sick. I am unsure if any more died. The family is devastated, absolutely devastated."

Workers reportedly found the body of Michael Biadasz, who owned the farm with his father. Methane or sulfur oxide fumes mixed with warm August air is believed to have killed Biadasz and his cows and police were still investigating.

"As if there isn't already enough danger in the lives of farmers, this family had to suffer this freaky accident," wrote Alice Ojala-Johnson on a Facebook post about the incident "So sad."

Now some say tougher rules need to be placed on manure holding tanks to prevent these kinds of incidents. The National Agriculture Safety Database warns that there needs to be adequate ventilation where animals are stored and warning signs posted.

"In addition to adhering to proper construction and maintenance procedures for liquid manure storage facilities, owners should be encouraged to follow a few precautionary measures to protect both workers and livestock from harmful manure gases," NASD writes.
