Floridians Fleeing Irma Land In Tennessee, Find Bears In Their Car

A family in Florida headed north when Hurricane Irma was bearing down on Florida, but in fleeing one of nature's dangers they just found themselves face to face with another. The family found two bears had broken into their car and were rifling through their belongings.

The Gonzalez family hit the road when Hurricane Irma looked like she was heading directly for their West Palm Beach home. After half a day's drive north, they learned that Irma had changed course to the west coast of Florida, but with the storm barreling through the whole state the parents decided it would be safer to just stay put in Tennessee.

The family rented a cabin on Silver Poplar Lane in Pigeon Forge and holed up for two days. Travis Gonzalez says that on one day, his son went outside to walk the dog. He ran back in the house, frantic.

"He came running inside saying there were bears around and on top of the car," said Travis.

Mr. Gonzalez went outside to look around, but he didn't see any bears. None appeared to be on top of the SUV or in the area, so he came back inside to tell his family it was all clear.

A little while later, his son saw something moving inside the family's vehicle. The family discovered that a mother bear and her cubs managed to get inside of the SUV and lock themselves in.

Travis, in a moment of bravery, went outside as his wife filmed from above. He cautiously walked up to the car, opened the door quickly and ran back indoors.

Travis doesn't know if he would do it again if given the chance. "I thought they were just cubs but after seeing the momma I would have thought twice."

The shocked mother screamed as her husband tried to free the bears. "Oh my god! I have never seen this before in all my life!" she shouted.

"Close the door!" she ordered her husband as he ran back inside.

The bears jumped out of the car, leaving the interior of the vehicle a wreck. They tore up the seats and the dashboard. It was a costly repair for the family because the seats are no longer sold.

The Gonzalez family posted the video to Facebook, entitling the post, "Bears want to hitch a ride back to Florida with us."

Many people are wondering if there is more to the story. They can't figure out how the bears managed to open the door, get into the vehicle and close the door behind them.

"How did they get in' and close the doors?" asked one commenter.

"My guess is that the people left the door open, went inside for a while and then returned to the car only to find the bears inside, panicked and then slammed the door shut," said another.

"Maybe you should clean the car once in a while especially after eating Taco Bell," another Facebook user suggested.
