Couple Finds Smelly Rock On Beach, Discovers It's Worth Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars

If you found a big goober of whale vomit lying on the beach, would you pick it up? If not, you might be losing out on a small fortune. One couple found a chunk of the smelly upchuck and found it was worth nearly $75,000.

Gary and Angela Williams were walking along the Morecambe Bay in Lancashire when they came across an odd-looking, waxy lump. The couple says it stank 'like a cross between a squid and farmyard manure,' but it intrigued them.

"It feels like a rock hard rubber ball. Its texture is like wax, like a candle," said Gary. "When you touch it you get wax sticking to your fingers."

Luckily for them, they realized what they'd stumbled upon. Better known by the euphemistic name ambergris, what they found was a hardened slurry that forms in the digestive tract of sperm whales. The substance protects whales from any sharp objects it might ingest. It takes a whale years to build up that much ambergris and spew it out, and it's even rarer for such a large lump of it to wash up on the shore.

Ambergris is a highly sought product, as it’s scent becomes sweet, earthy and pleasant as it ages. It's used in the manufacturing of fine perfumes, and fetches a pretty penny at market. Gary and Angela are currently negotiating with some interested buyers, but their roughly 3.5-pound lump of whale spew could be worth upwards of $70,000. A year earlier, a piece of ambergris almost twice the size was found on the same beach and earned the finder $176,000.
